The NERC LOIS Community Research Project (CRP) was a major, multidisciplinary thematic research programme funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council. It provided a unique integrated study of processes from the catchment to the open ocean. The LOIS CRP provided for the first time an integrated, holistic view of how coastal ecosystems work, and how they are likely to respond to future environmental changes caused by the activities of man, on land and at sea. The River-Atmosphere-Coast Study (RACS) was the component of the LOIS programme looking at processes from the river catchment into the coastal sea. It produced a rivers data set (RACS-R), an estuarine data set, a salt marsh data set (BIOTA), a coastal oceanographic data set, an inshore moorings data set (Holderness Experiment) and an atmospheric chemistry data set. The Holderness Experiment comprised three moored instrument deployments during the winters of 1993-1994, 1994-1995 and 1995-1996. Mooring platforms holding a bottom pressure recorder, ADCP, S4 EMCM and a transmissometer were deployed at 8 stations along two lines off the Holderness coast. There was very little ADCP data for the 1993 and 1994 deployments. The data are held by BODC in the National Oceanographic Database (NODB). It is hoped to publish the data in future as part of a fully documented CD-ROM product.
